FAQs: Buoyancy aid vs lifejacket

When it comes to water safety, wearing a life jacket or buoyancy aid can make all the difference in case of an emergency. However, there is a difference between the two and it's important to know which one to use depending on the situation.

In this blog we'll talk about the main difference between a life jacket and a BA, and when to use each one.

Life jackets

A life jacket is a personal floatation device designed to keep your head and body afloat in water, even if you become unconscious. They are essential for situations where there is a risk of drowning, for example when you're boating, kayaking or fishing.

Life jackets come in all different shapes and sizes, available to fit adults, children and even your pets. They are typically made from foam or inflatable materials and have straps to secure them around your chest and waist, with some models also having crotch straps to prevent it from riding up when in the water. They often come in bright colours with reflective tape making them highly visible, aiding rescuers in finding you more easily.

Buoyancy aids

A buoyancy aid (BA in short), is another type of personal floatation device that is designed to keep you afloat in the water, however, unlike a life jacket, a BA is not designed to keep your head above the water if you become unconscious. It simply gives you some buoyancy whilst allowing you to move freely. They are ideal for activities where there is a lower risk of drowning, such as paddleboarding.

BA's are also made from foam and have straps to secure them comfortably around your chest and waist and come in a whole range of styles and sizes, however they are typically less bulky and more comfortable than life jackets, allowing for more range of motion and freedom in the water.

How to choose which one you need

Both life jackets and buoyancy aids are essential personal floatation devices that can save your life in case of an emergency. The main difference between the two is that a life jacket is designed to keep your head above water where as the buoyancy aid is not. In order to know which one you need, you should consider the activity you'll be taking part in and the level of risk involved.

Be sure to always wear the appropriate gear and check it regularly for any damage or wear and tear.
